Grooming: Is baldness a sign of exceptional virility?

"Typical male pattern baldness is caused by being genetically predisposed to the influence of the male hormone, testosterone – a kind of sensitivity towards it," says Glenn Lyons of the Philip Kingsley trichology clinic in London. "That male hormone in men is also responsible for a hairy chest, so people think it makes you more 'manly' – you must have more of it to have a bald head or hairy chest.

It's nonsense. Levels of testosterone are the same in bald men as those with a full head of hair. And baldness isn't passed down from the mother's side of the family, either, so we can put that one to rest, too. You can get it from either side of the family."
