Wellbeing: Public in the dark over benefits of sunshine

A little bit of sunshine can be good for you according to a study published in the Proceedings Of The National Academy Of Sciences. The report emphasises the importance of vitamin D in protecting against death caused by cancers of the prostate, breast, colon and ovaries, as well as in maintaining healthy bones. Vitamin D is produced by exposure to sunlight or by eating foods such as oily fish and meat. Sunlight exposure during the winter months is not always considered sufficient to help with vitamin D production, however, meaning supplementation may be required.
