Get the look: The facelift in a haircut

There are lots of simple tricks you can use to look younger – and they don't all revolve around make-up, says Steven Goldsworthy of Goldsworthy's Hairdressing.

* Sweep hair off the face to reveal the cheekbones – it emphasises bone structure which can help define the shape of the face when skin tone is softening. If your hair's cut in a bob, tuck it behind the ears to do the same.

* Unless your forehead is furrowed and you want to disguise the lines, grow out your fringe to open up the face for a less 'clouded', lighter look

* Grow a longer bob to help disguise a less-than firm neck

* Don't forget to soften your hair colour as the years go by – skin tone changes to correspond with the lack of pigment in hair as it becomes grey (or white, in reality) so the stark colours of first youth look severe and draining
