Get the look: Jewels in the crown: accessorise your hairstyle

No matter how simple the style, there isn't a red-carpet look that isn't improved by a little bit of bling in the barnet region, as stars from Jennifer Lopez to Charlize Theron are well aware. But it's not as simple as sticking on a studded showpiece…

* If hair's thin or fine, it won't support heavy, metal adornments. And if you need the accessory to be functional as well as decorative, try it first on long or thick hair – you may find the clasp isn't big enough to hold it all back without bursting open

* Accessories can slide out of squeaky clean, super-shiny hair so apply mousse before drying or even hairspray after to give them something onto which they can grip

* Be inventive. Hook earrings and brooches can be gripped in to hair and secured with Kirbys. Bracelets can decorate the base of a pony tail (don't use anything valuable, though, as you won't notice if it slips off)

* Decorate behind the ear, as accessories near the face can be distracting and look over-the-top. And gripping hair back in front of the ears is strictly for schoolgirls
