* Use an intensive conditioner a few days before colouring. Sections of hair that are in bad condition will give a more intense result than the rest
* Long hair may require more product, so buy two packs in case
* Start by rimming round your hairline with Vaseline to prevent staining of the skin
* Test colour first on a small hidden section for allergic reaction
* With permanent colour, don't interrupt the recommended development time as hair is taken through several processes before reaching the right shade
* Use specialist colour-protecting shampoos and conditioners afterwards and avoid deep-cleansing shampoos that can strip colour
